User Interface and Design
The Happn app has a clean, modern design with an intuitive interface. The main screen shows a feed of profiles you’ve crossed paths with recently. You can like profiles directly from the feed by tapping the heart icon. Your profile and matches are accessed by tapping the profile icon in the bottom nav bar.
The profile screens use bold colors, fun illustrations, and animated transitions to make the experience feel lively compared to other minimal dating apps. Photo uploads and profile editing use a straightforward interface similar to other social media apps.
Overall, Happn’s UI feels fast, responsive, and easy to navigate. The visual design is aesthetically pleasing with small animations and illustrations that give the app personality.
Cross Paths Feed
The main feature of Happn is the cross paths feed showing profiles of users you’ve encountered in real life. The app uses your location history to determine when you’ve been near another user. Profiles show how many times and when/where your paths have crossed.
The cross paths feed makes it easy to discover and like people you may have seen around your neighborhood, workplace, or favorite hangouts. It feels more natural than endlessly swiping through strangers on some dating apps.
You can personalize your Happn profile by adding photos, a bio, job, education, interests, and more. Showing off your personality helps attract matches with similar interests.
Uploading clear, flattering photos is especially important for getting noticed on dating apps. Happn allows up to 9 photos and 1 video to showcase your best self.
Likes, Crushes, and Chats
When you like someone’s profile, it’s kept secret unless they also like you back. If you both like each other, you form a Crush and can start chatting. You can also send a Super Like called a “Charm” to stand out.
Chats have all the usual messaging features – text, emojis, photos, etc. You can review profiles of your Crushes and Chats from the matches tab. Overall, the like/match flow should feel familiar to users of other dating apps.
Encounters and Flashnotes
Happn’s “Encounters” feed shows likes you’ve received. You can like them back or pass. Flashnotes are icebreaker messages you can send someone before matching to spark conversation.
These features help make connecting with matches easier compared to apps where only mutual likes can message. However, Encounters and Flashnotes require a paid membership.
You can share Happn profiles with friends by tapping the share icon on a profile. This seems intended for getting your friends’ opinion on a match. Profile sharing requires the other user’s consent.
In addition to crossing paths, Happn has some other location-based features. You can check out profiles of people nearby and see users on a map view.
The app also lets you add your favorite places. Your top places are shown on your profile so matches can see where you like to hang out.
I tested Happn on a Google Pixel 5 running Android 12. The app loaded profiles, feeds, and matches swiftly with no lag or bugs. Animations and transitions between screens were smooth. Overall, Happn felt fast and responsive during testing.
One minor performance issue is that loading the cross paths feed takes longer when you first open the app. This is likely due to the app pulling your location history to find profiles you’ve crossed paths with. After the initial load, scrolling through additional profiles is fast.
Battery drain seemed average for a dating app. Happn uses location services in the background to track your movement, but this didn’t seem to impact battery life significantly compared to other social and dating apps.
Data usage is relatively light. The app compresses images and uses other optimizations to minimize mobile data usage while scrolling feeds and chatting.
As a location-tracking app, privacy is an important consideration with Happn. The app provides several options to control how your location and profile are shared.
By default, your approximate location (within 1 km) is shown to nearby users. You can disable this or increase the radius up to 90 km. It’s also possible to hide your work and home locations.
Profile privacy settings allow you to hide your full name, age, and other info. You can block specific users if needed. Chats are encrypted end-to-end for security.
Overall, Happn seems to give users reasonable control over their privacy settings. However, it’s impossible to prevent completely anonymous tracking of your location by the app itself.
The Happn app is free to download and use with some limitations. A premium subscription called Happn Premium unlocks additional features.
The free version of Happn lets you do basic matching by liking and chatting with mutual likes. You can browse the cross paths feed and user profiles.
- Limited number of likes per day
- Can’t see who likes your profile
- No ability to send Flashnotes
- Ads are shown
The free version is fairly usable, but paying unlocks the app’s full functionality.
A Happn Premium subscription costs $15 per month if billed monthly, or as low as $10 per month if billed annually. Premium unlocks:
- Unlimited likes
- See everyone who likes you
- Send unlimited Flashnotes
- Ad-free experience
- More profile control and visibility options
Happn Premium is reasonably priced compared to premium upgrades for other dating apps. The annual plan in particular is affordable. Premium is worthwhile if you use the app regularly.
In addition to the premium subscription, Happn has some one-time in-app purchases:
- Charm (Super Like): $3
- Spotlight: $7 (promote your profile)
- Boost: $7 (promote your profile)
These can be helpful but aren’t required. The premium subscription offers more overall value.
Who is Happn Good For?
Happn is a fun, unique dating app for active people living in urban areas. The location crossing paths feature works best in dense cities where you encounter a lot of potential matches going about your daily routine.
The app is better suited for casual dating rather than serious relationships. Matches tend to be based more on proximity than deep compatibility. However, some users undoubtedly find long-term relationships on Happn.
Users of all gender and sexual orientations can find matches, although straight women seem to be the primary target audience. The app requires Facebook verification, so it’s intended for adults rather than teens.
