The YouTube Premium Android app comes with several useful features:
Additionally, a YouTube Premium subscription includes YouTube Music Premium with its own set of features:
Other miscellaneous perks include:
In my experience, the YouTube Premium Android app performs very well and takes full advantage of the enhanced bitrates available to subscribers.
Videos load quickly, even at high resolutions. 1080p HD videos look crisp and clear thanks to improved bitrates. There is no buffering or lag, provided you have a sufficiently fast internet connection.
Background audio playback works flawlessly. I regularly listen to long podcasts or music playlists with the screen locked or while using other apps. Audio playback continues uninterrupted.
The app is responsive when scrolling, searching, browsing video recommendations, and navigating menus. Everything feels snappy.
Video downloads for offline viewing complete quickly. A 10 minute, 1080p video downloads in under 30 seconds on my device. The video quality remains high when watching downloads offline.
In summary, performance is excellent across the board and a noticeable upgrade over the free YouTube experience.
The YouTube Premium app user interface is clean, simple, and easy to navigate. The layout is identical to the free YouTube app, except with the addition of some premium indicators.
When signed into a Premium account, the familiar YouTube logo gains a “Premium” label. The Library tab also gains a new Downloads section for accessing offline video content.
Aside from those subtle indicators, the interface looks and functions the same as the free YouTube app:
The interface works well and most users already know how to navigate YouTube, so existing familiarity carries over nicely to the Premium experience.
YouTube Premium does not provide any exclusive high-quality video content, unlike some other subscription services such as Netflix and Prime Video. The video content is the same as what you would find on free YouTube.
However, YouTube Premium subscribers can enjoy that same content library without any ads interrupting their viewing experience. Since ads are removed entirely, you can binge videos continuously without breaks.
Additionally, background audio playback gives you more flexibility to enjoy long-form YouTube content like podcasts, audiobooks, or music playlists while on the go. Instead of constantly staring at your phone’s screen, you can lock it or use other apps while the audio continues playing.
Finally, downloading videos for offline viewing allows access to YouTube’s massive content library in situations when you lack an internet connection – on airplanes, in remote areas with poor cell reception, or whenever you want to reduce mobile data usage.
So in summary, the core video content itself does not change or improve with a Premium subscription. Rather, that same content library becomes more enjoyable, flexible, and accessible.
YouTube Premium is available on a monthly or annual billing cycle. Monthly plans start at $11.99 USD per month. Discounted annual plans are $107.99 USD per year.
YouTube Premium Pricing
Billing Cycle | Price (USD) |
---|---|
Monthly | $11.99 |
Annual | $107.99 (saves $24 per year) |
Additionally, Google offers discounted family plans and student plans:
Compared to rivals like Netflix and Spotify, YouTube Premium is priced competitively:
Service | Standard Price (USD) |
---|---|
Netflix | $15.49 per month |
Hulu | $12.99 per month (with ads) |
Spotify | $9.99 per month |
YouTube Premium | $11.99 per month |
So in terms of value-for-money, YouTube Premium holds up nicely. However, it is still an added expense on top of free YouTube. The value depends largely on how heavily you use YouTube and whether you value the ad-free, background play, and offline download perks.
For frequent YouTube viewers and listeners, the enhancements are well worth the monthly fee and make the platform far more enjoyable. But more casual users may be fine sticking with the free ad-supported experience..
YouTube Premium Android App Pros:
YouTube Premium Cons:
The YouTube Premium Android app delivers an excellent enhanced YouTube experience that is well worth the monthly fee for regular YouTube users. Going ad-free and gaining background audio and offline downloads take an already great service and make it even better – especially for music and podcast listeners. For frequent YouTube visitors, the Premium upgrades are absolutely worth the price. More casual users may be fine sticking with the free ad-supported tier.
Overall I highly recommend YouTube Premium to regular YouTube users who want to eliminate ads and gain more flexibility over how and when they can access YouTube’s vast content library. The Android app works flawlessly and takes full advantage of all the premium perks available to subscribers.
